Chunky woolen knits are the definitive way to keep warm on chilly winter days without losing your style cred. We show you how to get the look.
Thick, warm knits such as woolen jumper dresses, coats, cardigans, beanies and scarves are the easiest way to achieve catwalk cool during winter. This versatile item is a fabulous alternative to winter coats and jackets and come in various styles that complement any outfit, from basic to boho.
While these cosy fashion items are the ultimate in comfortable chic, this look can easily go very wrong if you don’t know how to wear them. Here are a few tips on stylishly wearing these gorgeous garments.
Invest in an over-sized turtleneck
This season’s statement knit is the over-sized turtleneck. It’s the perfect substitute for a stuffy coat on a less cold day and go really well with jeans and knee-length boots. Try wearing turtleneck with a pencil skirt and boots for work and wear it over your little embellished dress for a chilly night out.
Most chunky knits are loose and slouchy and pile kilo’s on to your appearance. Maintain your sleek silhouette by cinching your woolen dress at the waist with a thick soft leather belt or buy a long cardigan with a woolen belt. Tie the belt loosely to ensure that your jersey doesn’t puff out at either end after cinching.
Keep a slim silhouette
Always team your chunky knit with other slim-fitting items such as skinny jeans, slim-fitting tops and boots. For a sophisticated twist, wrap a black thick knee-length cardigan over your shirt and pencil skirt and wear you hair up. Low-rise bootlegs and stiletto boots will balance out your proportions.
Add a pop of colour
Experiment with various colours, patterns, textures and details. Choose between cable-knits and, brights and darks, double breasted or zipped. Knits with collars, brooches or any other attention grabbing style should be worn with minimal accessories.
In order to ensure that your knit makes it through the winter season, take proper care of it. Maintain the quality of your knit by having it properly dry-cleaned and invest in a clothes brush to remove wool balls. Avoid wearing it in the rain as this might damage the wool.
