The military influence is back in style. We show you how to wear the military chic look.

Military chic

With the fashion world’s current love for all things masculine, it was only a matter of time before the military trend made its way back onto the catwalks. But that doesn’t mean cargo pants are ready to come out of hiding just yet – the current military-inspired look is less Saving Private Ryan and more tailored glamour with a military spin.

Military chic

Lace, feminine florals or ruffles provide a perfect contrast to androgynous military-inspired pieces. But keep the look balanced to avoid looking like a girl scout. Wear a military jacket with a full dress or A-line skirt and ankle boots for a style-savvy look. For a more sophisticated look, wear military-inspired pieces with jodhpurs or a pencil skirt.

A bling thing

Military style has gone glam with sparkly embellishments like metallic buttons and chains on the neckline, shoulder and bust area. Add embellished leggings or studded ankle boots, and your look will ooze rock-chic glam.

Too cool for school

A sharply tailored military-inspired jacket is the perfect piece for preppy cool. Think double-breasted coats, structured pants, perfectly tailored shirts and buckled pieces. Choose a coat with a high neck, with button detail on the shoulders or the bust, as opposed to the standard issue. But draw the line at donning anything that resembles a uniform.

The extras

In terms of accessories, you can’t go wrong with classic aviator sunglasses. Long chain necklaces, dog tags and studded messenger bags will also work well with a military-inspired outfit. When it comes to embellishments, you can’t go wrong with buckles, bronze piping, brass buttons, studs and zips.

The shoes

Military boots are all the rage right now and look fantastic worn with dark skinny denims or leggings. But avoid wearing them with dresses or plaid pieces as you don’t want the look to be too grungy. Look out for high-heeled knee-high and ankle boots – they’ll also work well with this trend.

The military look for your figure

1. Invest in a double-breasted coat if you have a small bust, as this will complement your figure. Embellishments on the hips of pants and skirts can also add curves.

2. Pear-shaped girls will benefit from eye-catching metallic embellishments on the shoulders as it will balance out your figure.

3. Broad-shouldered or apple-shaped girls should steer clear from the structured military-inspired jackets with shoulder detail, because it’ll only add volume to your shoulder and torso area – where you don’t need it. Instead, opt for a looser padded army-style jacket that’ll cover up bulky areas.
