The iconic pencil skirt, first introduced by Christian Dior in the 1940s, has returned to our wardrobes. We show you how to wear it.

How to choose the perfect pencil skirt

The main reason the pencil skirt is still as popular today, is that the cut and shape of this curve-hugging item creates an instant hour-glass figure. In order to create this look, your pencil skirt should be well tailored, slim fitting and not too tight. It should be knee-length or just two centimeters longer. It should be as sleek as possible, so steer clear of pencil skirts with distracting or bulging details, such as pockets or belt loops. This detracts from the shape you want to create.

Apple or pear shaped:

If you have a flabby tummy, wear a top that is well tailored and tucked in at the waist to create a more balanced figure. Fuller figured women should wear a jacket that will cover the widest part of their body, such as the waist or hip area. If you’re a pear-shaped fashionista, a black pencil skirt with black stockings or pantyhose will make the lower half of your body appear smaller. Wearing a cardigan or shirt in a pastel colour with a darker skirt will create an optical illusion, balancing out your figure. A skirt with a slightly flared hemline or a slit up the back will draw the attention away from our trouble areas by focusing on your legs.

Tall and lean:

Wear a skirt that fits a few centimeters above your waist in order to shorten your torso. Don’t tuck your shirt or blouse into your skirt. Rather opt for a tight fitting shirt or jacket that just skims your hips. Pumps or flats will never do when it comes to creating this look, instead opt for a pair of pretty peep-toe heels.

Petite:

Wear a skirt that ties at your hips as opposed to your waist and tuck in your shirt. This will lengthen your torso area. If you have a narrow waist line, tucking your shirt or blouse into your skirt will combat this. Don’t ever wear a skirt that ends below you knees, as this will make your legs appear even shorter. Wear a skirt that meets the middle of your knees and always team your skirt with a pair of stunning stiletto heels.
